6TH ANNUAL
MAJOR MCCLUNG MEMORIAL RUN

5k/10k RUN and 5k WALK

ABOUT THE EVENT:
This is a race dedicated to Megan Malia Leilani McClung (April 14, 1972–December 6, 2006).  She was the first female United States Marine Corps officer killed in combat during the Iraq War. Major McClung was serving as a public affairs officer in Al Anbar Province, Iraq when she was killed.  Major McClung's parents began this event in order to have a race to remember their fallen daughter and to raise money to donate to the Semper Fi Fund.

MATSG 53 and her family now host an annual run at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station to remember this local fallen hero. Skagit Runners and ATF were used to certify both the 5k and 10k courses.

The certified 5K and 10K courses at the Megan McClung Memorial Run pass along a bluff overlooking the beach and just beside the runways at NAS Whidbey.  If you are lucky while running you may see the Prowlers and Growlers the Navy and Marine Corps fly from this base as well as the Orion sub-hunters taking off or landing.  Temperatures are typically cool with the breeze coming down the Admiralty Straight from the Pacific Ocean.  A beautiful course with views of the Olympic Peninsula, the San Juan Islands and Victoria Island (Canada) in the distance.
